The coastline of Osaka Bay penetrates to the northeast where rivers such as Yodo River discharge. The inner part of the bay is characterized by shallow water and muddy substrata. Living organics grow abundantly in the bay as water from the rivers contains rich organic matter and nutrients.Water is exchanged between Osaka Bay and its adjacent waters in large volume on account of the existence of two remote openings in the bay, the Akashi and the Kitan Straits.
